AIGRETTE
18th century. With two large emeralds, a large ruby above them, and many small diamonds and pearls surrounding these, this aigrette from the Topkapı Palace Treasury is extremely sumptuous. The four pendant chains with diamonds and pearls that look like a shimmering part of the feathers further enhance its magnificence. It is a brilliant example of pendant aigrettes described as “Hindkari” in Ottoman documents. The cabochon-cut of large stones (rubies and emeralds) indicate that the traditions of the 17th century still continue in certain respects.
The artisans who crafted aigrettes for sultans and members of the court are documented and described through archival records.
